NID is a center for design excellence since last 6 decades , has been active as an autonomous design institute under the aegis of the ministry of commerce and Industry , government of India and is recognized by department of scientific and industrial research , government of India and research institution for Industrial , communication , textile and IT integrated (experienced) design.

NID has a very systematic approach of selection of students. Their committee seeks for parameters like perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation in their students for pursuing this challenging career in design. The full selection system is divided into two parts Design Aptitude Test and NID Studio Test followed by Interview.
